So someone brought in the Twilight audiobooks to work and I just could not resist. Ran it and listened and I'm about a third of the way through now.
It's... it's no worse than any of the teen shit from my day. In fact, it's fairly similar to the Roswell series that I loved so dearly at the tender age of 12. But it's still pretty hilarious - I'm not even at the vampire reveal yet, it's all 'oh, I just moved to this town and was unpopular in my old school because I read books for fun and am pale and clumsy and shall clearly be unpopular here but oh how all the boys swoon over me how tiresome and everyone's beautiful' ect, ect. It's not just like some bizzare sparkly Underworld fanfiction, it's like a mix between that and a well thought out LJ post. The novel wouldn't be half so ridiculous if it wasn't trying so hard. For a 17-year-old she uses words that I had to fucking Google. I mean, I'm not exactly an English lit nerd, but I've got a pretty good handle on fancy English words, enough to know the difference between 'smart' and 'OH HEY, I'M SMART'.
But despite this, I can't stop listening to it. It's like a train wreck. A beautiful, sparkly train wreck.
